Our local beach. Lyme Regis, a beautiful and quite famous little coastal town. Our Lyme is famous for fossils and the beautiful cobb. Furthermore, Lyme has a very unique and interesting history, but, that’s for another time.
Shall we start with the harbour? The harbour silts up and adjoins a sandy beach. As a result, the harbour holds plenty of flatties in the summer along with shoals of mullet and school bass. As with all harbours, there is an abundance of mini species and always the token pout available after dark. Late August onwards you can expect to find a few pollack cruising the harbour, some being of considerable size.
Probably most famously renowned for being featured in the Jane Austin’s novel Persuasion and of course John Fowles The French Lieutenant’s Woman. This fantastic sea defence produces some of the best fishing in my opinion. Very small hooks under a float can produce stonking mullet while a big fish bait after dark will find you fighting bull huss. There is always something to catch off the cobb.
It really is just that. It’s the main beach, one half is sand and one is shingle. The sandy beach will always throw up pout and in the summer plenty of flattish. The shingle beach gives a little variety in that it has a couple ledges and kelp beds. Dogfish, bull huss and bass will all be found as well as all the pout, eels and wrasse.
Monmouth Beach is a real fisherman’s dream. Mixed ground with some fantastic sand channels and serious rough ground. The fishing here is unbelievable. Tackle losses can be heavy at times but the rewards are great. Almost all species can be found here, Wrasse, pout, dogfish huss and bass are all regulars on Monmouth.
BAIT AND TACKLE
Walk toward the beach, you will find in the back of an archway a superb tackle shop, it’s aptly called The Tackle Box. From the outside, it looks like a very tiny little nook, walk through the door and it’s an Aladdin’s cave! Darren, the shop owner is full of local knowledge and knows all the best fishing spots. All the staff have a wealth of knowledge regarding all the products they stock. Yes. they even have a marine tank set up with local sea life, you guessed it, sea life from the actual harbour. Darren has developed a new product, the Hook-ups. Designed primarily for boat fishing these rigs have proven to be amazing! During the summer months, you can even hire a kayak and try your hand at trolling for the mackerel by using Lyme Kayak hire. With full safety equipment and GPS tracking, the kayak hire is a great thing for fishing or just taking a paddle across the bay. Bait wise Tackle Box stock a wide range of both live and frozen baits. Remember, local knowledge is priceless, if you are in the area please do pop in.
